Area 1 Show Jumping Qualifiers
at Eglinton Park, 8th May 2005
The weekend started on Saturday afternoon with several members of Ayr and North Ayrshire riding clubs volunteering to help build the course. A few hours later we had the three arenas looking very professional. Then one of my intermediate team had to pull out, so with a bit of shuffling, Caroline Vance was promoted to intermediate and Stephen MacGregor was drafted in to be the 4th member of the novice team. (It’s amazing how quickly you can turn a man from confident course builder’s assistant to nervous wreck!!)
Sunday kicked off nice and early with the teams as follows
Novice (pic on right)
Shelby Reilly with Cous Cous
Caroline Quarm and Rosie
Julia Kerr and Steel
Stephen MacGregor and Leo
Intermediate
Linda McFadzean and Rockhill Morning Star
Gwen Smith and Mia
Caroline Vance and Alfie
Lucy Reid and Alice
Equitation

Julia Kerr and Steel
The novice team were first to jump, and all had fantastic first rounds. Cous cous got a bit enthusiastic about the whole event and had one fence down, but the team ended round one with a clear score. The next round was very similar, leaving Ayr on a double clear along with 3 other teams. During the jump off, Caroline was very unlucky having a fence down, but the rest of the team went clear. So we finished with a very respectable 4th.
The intermediate team started off well in the first round Gwen and Caroline having 4 faults each and Lucy with a clear. Linda’s horse was not having her best day and got a few time faults. In the second round Lucy got her second clear round to take her through to the jump off, Gwen was clear and Caroline had one fence down. That left us with 12 faults along with 3 other teams. There were 2 teams with double clears and one team with 8 faults, so again we ended up 4th .
The jump off for the individual was very exciting. Lucy had put Alice back in the lorry as we were told there would be about an hour till the jump off, then about 25 mins later they announced the jump off was starting. I had a panic attack trying to find Lucy, Caroline searched the lorry park, and Susan Ward finally managed to phone her.
Lucy arrived on Alice looking a tad flustered, had to go straight in the ring and jump off without even seeing the course. She did some fantastic turns, but unfortunately was pipped to the post by 0.4secs, so came 2nd.
The equitation jumping team also did very well. Julia and Steel jumped a lovely round scoring 99 and got 5th individually. Poor Steel looked half asleep after her round as she had competed at Brechin in the ODE the day before. Caroline and Lucy, also scored in the 90’s but were just outside the placings. The overall team score earned them 3rd. My thanks have to go to Caroline Vance who did her homework and found out all the rules of equitation jumping before the competition. (So much for having a Chef D’equippe, eh?)
All in all, everyone had a good day. Thanks to all the team members for being very patient with me and turning up at the correct arenas at the correct times. I’m away now for a HUGE glass of wine!!
Kerrie Chalmers.
