What to wear? - Competitions - General
At Open Competitions the rules of BRC are used and these are strictly enforced
at Area level competitions and above.
Please have a look at the rules below which apply to competitions in general,
then at rules for specific disciplines.
Rider
- Compulsory guidelines must be followed
- Correct Riding Clothes - generally:
- shirt with collar and tie or stock,
- a jacket,
- white, cream or beige jodhpurs and black boots
- Gloves - are advised for all times mounted.
- Chaps, Half Chaps & Gaiters
- Black or brown polished gaiters with matching boots may be worn
- Juniors may wear half chaps with matching boots
- Chaps and half-chaps not allowed in Senior competitions
- Whips -
for Dressage and Horse Trials Dressage see specific rules
- No whips greater than 75cm (30ins)
- No whips shorter than 45cm (18ins)
- Hard point or weights at the end are not allowed
- Must be carried in the traditional manner
Horse
- Bits
- only acceptable bits are illustrated in the
current British Dressage rules (illustrated below) are prermitted,
with the exception of bi-metallic mouthpieces:
- Ordinary snaffle with double jointed mouthpiece
- Ordinary snaffle with double jointed mouthpiece (french link)
- Ordinary snaffle with jointed mouthpiece with Lozenge
- Ordinary snaffle with jointed mouthpiece
- Racing snaffle (D ring)
- Egg-butt snaffle
- without cheeks
- with cheeks
- Other type of snaffle with cheeks
- Snaffle with upper cheeks only
- Rubber, leather or plastic snaffle jointed or unjointed
- Unjointed snaffle
- Hanging cheeks snaffle or Loose ring hanging snaffle
- Myler snaffles without the use of hooks: MB09; Snaffle, MB01; Comfort Snaffle, MB02; Comfort Snaffle Wide Barrel, MB322; Mullen Barrel, MB10; Bristol Snaffle
- Bits of rubber, nylon or other synthetic materials are permitted
- Must not have been altered
- It is permitted to use 2 reins with a snaffle bit
- plastic bits with a cylindrical joint are not permitted
- Hackamores, bitless bridles, blinkers and hoods are forbidden

- Numnahs and Saddlecloths - are allowed, saddleclothes may be in club colours and may bear the club name/logo
